Old brick, working stoves, and the flue that is dirty despite being run hot.
A good share of the older Snowflake housing was built before anyone required a flue liner. What you have in those chimneys is brick around a void, sometimes with clay tile added later, sometimes with a stainless liner run down it in the last thirty years, and sometimes with nothing between the fire and a hundred-and-forty-year-old wall.
Sweeping one is not harder, it is a different set of things to watch. Brush pressure that is fine in a tiled flue can move tile that has already cracked. Unlined brick sheds mortar into the smoke shelf, and how much comes down tells you more about the chimney's real condition than anything visible from the room. We bag what falls and show it to you, because a handful of mortar is a data point, not debris.
Snowflake stoves put several cords through a season, and owners often assume that burning hot keeps the flue clean. Mostly it does - which is why the surprise, when it comes, is a big one.
Two things override a hot burn. The first is an oversized appliance damped down for twenty weeks of the winter, which smoulders instead of burning. The second is wood that is wetter than the owner believes; juniper splits easily and therefore tends to go into the stove sooner than it should. Either one produces glaze regardless of how impressive the fire looks on the coldest night.
Because volume and temperature pull in opposite directions here, nobody can tell you a correct sweep interval over the phone. The Level 1 inspection that comes with every sweep is what sets next year's interval - a written finding based on what was in your flue, not a rule of thumb.
Tell us the appliance and how it is used. You get a firm number before anyone starts.

It means the chimney is shedding, and how much matters. A little is normal on old unlined brick. A lot means the interior is deteriorating and we will show you the camera footage before recommending anything.
