Down Off the Mountain, and a Different Job
Snowflake sits at 5,600 feet, eight hundred feet below Show Low and a world away from Pinetop. The pines thin out into juniper and open country, the rainfall drops, and the town looks like what it is - a farming settlement laid out on a grid in the 1870s, with the brick and stucco housing that goes with that history.
Two things follow. The chimneys are masonry rather than class-A pipe, often original brick on the older houses, and the failure modes are mortar and crown rather than pipe joints. And the appliances are working appliances - out here a stove is frequently the primary heat rather than a supplement, run from October to April on a serious duty cycle.
Old Brick, Hard Water, Hard Sun
The masonry problem in Snowflake is different from the one in Show Low. There is less rain, but the sun exposure is brutal and there is far less tree cover, so mortar joints get baked, dried and cycled harder. Older lime mortar in the historic housing erodes to a depth you can put a finger into, and once the joints are open the monsoon has a direct path in even though there is less of it falling.
Repointing an original brick chimney is not the same job as patching a modern one, and using modern high-cement mortar on soft historic brick damages it - the mortar ends up harder than the brick and the brick face spalls instead of the joint. If your chimney is genuinely old, that is worth saying out loud before anyone starts mixing.
Stoves That Actually Work for a Living
A stove that heats a Snowflake house through winter runs a duty cycle several times higher than the same model as a weekend cabin appliance. Everything consumable wears proportionally - gaskets in a couple of seasons rather than five, baffles warping, firebrick crumbling. None of that is a defect. It is the appliance doing its job, and the parts are cheap while the stove is cold.
The underlying fault we find most often out here is a stove too large for the room, bought for the worst week of the year and then damped right down the other twenty. A damped stove smoulders, smouldering is incomplete combustion, and that means unburned volatiles up a cool flue and glaze on the flue wall - while producing less usable heat per cord. The fix is smaller hotter fires, and we do not sell stoves, so when we say it there is nothing behind it.
